One of my pet peeves in Children Photography and portraits is where the PROPS take over the portrait. I see so many photographers (and parents) getting so caught up it this that all they see is a child in a sea of props. A lot of times the lighting is mediocre and not professional because they are worried about the props..I love when we can just capture the baby or child or adult for that matter in a nice clean well lit image. Sure its great to have a scene and set but make it work and not overpowering. Sure a cute photo is a cute photo, but i guess when the photography skills go out the window for the props this bothers me.
So I was thrilled when I got a call for just this, NO PROPS! I explained what I wanted to do based on the old GAP tv and print ads. Remember the GAP ads? All on the fashion grey background, nothing else , simple. IT’s still classic! It is harder to do this than with no set or props I think too! Especially with a young child who has nothing to distract them and stay put for second..LOL SO patience and persistence. On all of us(child, parent and photographer).
Again don’t get me wrong, props and sets are great, just make sure you don’t loose sight of what you are really trying to capture. The innocent , the beauty, the heart , soul, the character, the tiny toes, the wrinkles, whatever!
