Every photographer has a few photo sessions that mean something a little more personally.

Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph Jon Bon Jovi and his wife Dorthea at the JBJ Soul Kitchen Red Bank location, before their well-deserved James Beard Foundation Impact Award recognition.

What made this one special for me wasn’t just the award or the great work they do through JBJ Soul Kitchen. It was the realization of how full-circle the moment felt.

I grew up literally four blocks from Jon in Sayreville NJ. I was the kid buying the Bon Jovi albums the day they were released. My very first concert was seeing Bon Jovi open for Ratt in the early 1980s. Back then, the idea that one day I’d be photographing Jon and Dorothea would have seemed kinda crazy.

Yet here we are.

Over the years, I’ve photographed CEOs, celebrities, and thousands of families, but every now and then a shoot hits a little differently. This was one of those moments.

What stands out most isn’t the fame. It’s seeing two people use their platform to make a real difference. The impact JBJ Soul Kitchen has had on communities throughout New Jersey and beyond is something worth celebrating, and the James Beard Foundation’s Impact Award is a reflection of that commitment.

As photographers, we spend a lot of time documenting other people’s stories. Every once in a while, one of those stories intersects with your own.

This was one of those days.
